Mattuppetty dam near Munnar

Mattuppetty is a dam location, easily reachable from Munnar. It is one of the best places to visit while holidaying at the hill station town.
The dam was built for power generation.
The road that goes over the dam takes you to places such as Kundala and Top Station.
The reservoir is huge. Boating is available, however you may have to wait as there are crowds most of the time.
The views are awesome-

The shops are just before the dam, if you are travelling from Munnar.
This is a spot a few kms past the dam. You will find many lovely locations while travelling along this road through the woods.
The hill slopes are either forests or tea gardens.

Kuttanad backwater travel

Kuttanad, the backwater heartland of Alappuzha, is made out of simple villages by the side of vast paddy fields and numerous canals.

A boat ride through there will not disappoint, to say the least. Best to visit on a sunny day and avoid the peak rainy period. A small canoe will not cost much to hire, where as a large house boat is quite expensive.
The paddy fields have to be protected from water incursion.
Kuttanad is the top in Kerala, when it comes to paddy production.
There is year round availability of water, thanks to the lakes and canals.

There are several locations where you can hire a boat from. Alappuzha is a good starting point for Kuttanad boat travel. There are several agencies or you can talk to the boat crew at the jetty.

There are plenty of boats to choose from as there are many locations where you could hire a boat.
A house boat-
A mid sized boat-
Or even a canoe-
Here is a church by waterside. Access is by boats. You can see a small boat dock by the side of it-
A shop near the water way. Interesting, isn't it?
Villagers transporting grass in a country boat-

Kuttanad is one of the best backwater areas to visit.

Thirunelli temple

Thirunelli temple is on a great location surrounded by hills and thick forest. The road to there is through the forest which is part of Tholpetty Wildlife Reserve.
It is usual to spot animals while travelling through the jungle road which starts past Mananthavady town in Wayanad.

Thirunelli temple, being a highly revered religious destination, the number of pilgrims travelling to there is quite high. So the forest road has a constant flow of vehicles. There is more chance to see animals when the traffic is low.

The temple and the scenery surrounding are awesome.
In the picture above, the building on the left is the temple. The right side structure is the office. The ticket counter is also there.
Temple view from another side-
These pillars shown below are hundreds of years old.
More Pillars-

Back side of the temple-
A door at the back-

View from the temple courtyard-
Worship inside the sanctum is limited to Hindus. Even without that, a visit to Thirunelli is great. The views and the peaceful atmosphere will leave you with nice memories about this sacred place.

Muzhappilangad beach near Kannur

Muzhappilangad beach near Kannur is the only drive in beach in Kerala. So if you are heading to Kannur to spend a day or two, one of the best places to spend some time is this beach. Of course you should be driving and not using public transport.
This is a 7 km beach. So there are multiple access points from the coastal road that runs parallel to the beach.

This is the northern entry of the beach-
Here is how it looks once you enter. This is the northern end.
There are steps are good to sit and relax. They get quite hot during the day though.
The above photo was taken during peak monsoon. That is why waves are near the steps. The beach is broader except for June to September.

Here is the village view.
Drive through the coastal road and you will see multiple entry points into the beach. This one in the below picture is near a tourist accommodation joint that overlooks the sea.
The southern end of the beach is the best part for beach driving. This is the road to the beach-
Now time for some driving fun.

The person on the scooter is a local. A very friendly person. We saw him in a couple of places. We had a nice chat and he was happy to pose for a few photos.

On a sunny day, you will see a  few vehicles on the beach.
How often do you see a cat on a beach?

And why is he there? What is the catch?

The picture below has some vital clues -
Southern end of the beach is also the place of some fishing action.
They are sorting their fishing net, it appears-
 A close up-
It is all about team work. And more of it to pull a boat out of water, as it seems below-
Muzhuppilangad drive in beach will not disappoint, if you are there on a sunny day and with a vehicle to drive.
